born into a wealthy family, riku never knew what it meant to want. his father, hikaru, was a humble man from a humble life until he met his mother, reina. his mother's side of the family bred success, and nothing short of it. his grandmother, aguri, ran one of the most distinct ikebana schools across japan. settled in a massive, temple-styled building in okinawa, students eager to learn the art of ikebono ikebana would travel from anywhere in japan (or even outside of the country) to learn from the esteemed aguri sensei. ikebono style, or the "original" style of ikebana, as beautiful as it was, had never been something riku particularly felt drawn to.

as the only child, riku was raised with a single goal in mind: take over his grandmother's school when his time came. trained in the art of flower arrangement from a young age, it was clear he had an eye for the skill. he wasn't just trained to be the perfect ikebana practioner, and eventually, teacher. he was trained to be the perfect head of the house. awake before the rooster's crow, he learned all the basics, from how to hold himself in front of the public eye, to how to prepare the perfectly balanced, and even how to handle family business. morphed into the ideal head of the hanae family (since his father had taken his mother's name), riku never knew what it meant to want since he'd only ever been taught how to obey.

naturally, as every adolescent grows, they learn more about the world around them, and what it means to harbor selfish desires. though he was sheltered growing up, forced under the iron thumb of his grandmother's home schooling, at the age of thirteen, he got his first taste of freedom. reaching an artistic slump that forced him to come to a full-stop with his work for four months, his grandmother eventually decided enough was enough. she wanted him to travel; to try and find something that would inspire him. unfortunately for her, riku found a whole world outside of the stuffy walls of his family state; a world he came to love whole-heartedly; a world he wanted.

from there, things seemed to take a turn for the worst, at least, for aguri. it started in tiny spurts, riku asking to go on more "trips" to find his inspiration or staying out later and later without the watchful eye of the family guards.

one night when riku was nineteen, his entire life turned around. under the impression that his grandmother and parents were out on a trip to see an exhibit in tokyo, riku invited his newfound inspiration to the family estate. he was beautiful; shining under the moonlight in his family garden... as wrong as riku knew it was, he couldn't suppress the overwhelming thrill he felt that night. they'd been lovers for a while now, but riku refused to introduce him to the family, knowing no good would come of it. unfortunately, the one night he decided to take his lover home was the same night he lost it all.

not feeling well, aguri decided to cancel her trip to the exhibition and come home early. instead of the healing walk through the garden she was hoping for, she was horrified to find the sight of her grandson on top of another man.

riku never heard from him again after that. he knew his grandmother must have threatened him — "it was a business tactic" she'd claim whenever she explored new ways to get what she wanted. the lockdown on riku's life that followed were the worst few months of his life. now that he'd gotten a taste of what it felt like to want and to get, he never wanted to go back.

so he ran away.

packing his things, he snuck out in the middle of the night, leaving only a note with a promise, and no apology.

"I'm going to open my own school."

and so he did. abandoning the ways of ikebono, riku opened his own sogetsu style school right in tokyo. sogetsu ikebana, the modern contemporary art form popular not only in japan, but around the world, became riku's weapon. he was able to sell some of his arrangements for fairly high prices before he managed enough money to open his own school.

now living on his own in a penthouse in tokyo with a school popular enough to rival his grandmother's, he was never bothered by his family again. in fact, he was pretty sure they wanted nothing to do with him anymore. every day, he seeks new "inspirations" and thrills to help with both his art, and to live the life he's always wanted.
